Living With Glaucoma: Saundra’s Story of Loss and Support

Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight.” For many people, it slowly takes away vision and independence, reshaping daily life in ways that go far beyond the eye clinic. Saundra Light Gibbons, a patient living with glaucoma, caregiver, and occupational therapist, shared her perspective in response to the question: “What impact has living with glaucoma had on your life?”

Her reflections remind us of the importance of mourning, acceptance, and most of all, community support.*

Mourning the Losses

Saundra described her journey with glaucoma as one filled with grief. For her, it was essential to allow herself the space to mourn the losses brought by vision changes:

  • Loss of vision: The gradual decline in sight brought sadness and frustration.
  • Loss of occupation: She had to step away from the work she loved as an occupational therapist.
  • Loss of driving: The freedom of hopping in the car to pick up groceries or run small errands was no longer possible.
  • Loss of independence: Even daily routines like choosing clothing became complicated by color contrast issues. She shared how hard it is to tell black from navy, or white from light pink.

“I needed to be able to mourn the loss,” she said, reflecting on the importance of acknowledging these changes instead of ignoring them.

Finding Comfort in Others

For Saundra, the emotional toll of glaucoma has been just as heavy as the practical challenges. What has helped most, she explained, is the reassurance of others who share her experience.

“Having somebody else who understands that, who likely is going through the same thing, can give you some comfort, can help to calm you in those crisis moments.”

Her words remind us that support is not just medical, it is also emotional, built through shared stories and mutual understanding.

The Power of Community

Glaucoma affects much more than vision. It touches your routines, your sense of independence, your confidence, and your mental health. That’s why communities, online or in person, are so important. By connecting with others, you can find strength in shared experiences and help one another adapt to the changes that glaucoma brings.

Share Your Story

Saundra’s story shows that while glaucoma brings real challenges, healing begins with honesty and connection.
