Glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness worldwide, affects millions of individuals, often progressing without symptoms until irreversible vision loss occurs. There are many institutions and organizations supporting glaucoma research in the U.S. alone. The Glaucoma Research Foundation (GRF) is one of them, funding innovative research through the Catalyst for a Cure initiative. This collaboration brings together top scientists, clinicians, and researchers, all dedicated to finding groundbreaking treatments and, ultimately, a cure. Meet a few of the scientists behind the research.*

The Catalyst for a Cure Initiative

The Catalyst for a Cure (CFC) program fosters collaboration between scientists from diverse disciplines to accelerate glaucoma research. Unlike traditional research models, which often involve separate projects, CFC researchers work collectively to develop groundbreaking solutions. As Dr. Derek Welsbie from University of California San Diego explains, “The sum is greater than the parts,” adding that this teamwork has led to remarkable progress.

Exploring New Treatments and Innovations

Glaucoma specialists like Dr. Milica Margeta (Harvard Medical School) and Dr. Jiun Do (UC San Diego) are dedicated to uncovering the disease’s underlying causes and developing new neuroprotective strategies. Their research aims to slow, halt, or even reverse vision loss. Some of the most promising efforts include:

  • Stem cell therapy to regenerate the optic nerve
  • Neuroprotective targets to prevent retinal damage
  • Potential full-eye transplants as a future goal

The Glaucoma Research Foundation’s funding has been instrumental in supporting these high-risk, high-reward initiatives. Dr. Welsbie emphasizes that GRF allows researchers to “swing for the fences,” pursuing bold ideas that could lead to revolutionary breakthroughs.

A Future Without Vision Loss

With ongoing advancements and dedicated researchers, the future for glaucoma patients is brighter than ever. Scientists believe they are “on the verge of a breakthrough” that could transform glaucoma treatment and even restore vision. The support of donors and organizations is crucial in making this vision a reality.

In the words of one patient, “Because of Glaucoma Research Foundation, I have hope for a future where vision loss can be managed—and even prevented altogether.”
