Living with glaucoma and vision loss can take away enjoyment from some of life’s little pleasures. Reading, watching TV and taking a bath may all become more challenging with glaucoma. Fortunately, there are ways to help adjust to vision loss. Learn more about the adaptations to make your home more functional and improve your quality of life.*

What adjustments can be made in the home?

Consider making adjustments in these areas inside your home:

  • Lighting
    • Use overhead lights in large spaces and task lights to direct light where needed.
    • Add extra lighting in hallways and stairs.
    • Use dimmer switches to control the amount of light in rooms.
    • Use blinds and curtains to control glare from windows.
    • Use nightlights.
  • Stair Safety
    • Make sure there is plenty of light especially at the top and bottom of the steps.
    • Install handrails on both sides.
    • Mark the edges of steps with bright tape.
  • Bathroom
    • Use grab bars in the bathroom or shower.
    • Put contrasting tape around the bathtub.
    • Use non-skid bright colored mats.
    • Turn off the hot water first in your bathtub.
    • Use contrasting colored seats.
  • Functional Spaces
    • Use contrasting colors throughout the house, such as area rugs, light switches, electrical outlets, thermostats, doors, and curtains
    • Ensure that thresholds are flush with the floor.
    • Area rugs should be skid-proof and properly tacked down.
    • Replace worn or broken tiles and/or worn carpeting.
    • Arrange furniture that does not impede movement.

What other suggestions can be made to improve daily activities?

Try these suggestions to help ease daily tasks:

  • Use optical devices such as magnifiers, telescopes, and closed-circuit TVs.
  • Wear sunglasses with amber or yellow lenses to help improve glare.
  • Ask for large print labels on prescription medications from your pharmacy.
  • For a computer, use a large type keyboard, large monitor, and screen magnifiers.
  • Try using audio-aids and/or purchasing a screen-reading software.
  • Purchase large-text products when possible such as books, magazines, clocks, etc..
  • Sit closer to the TV in a room with optimal lighting and minimal glare.
  • Organize household items and develop a system for grouping clothes and arranging food.
