August is recognized as Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of eye health and safety for youth in the United States. This observance highlights the necessity of regular eye check-ups, the use of proper eye protection, and education on preventing eye injuries and diseases. This back-to-school season it’s essential to ensure that children’s vision is in optimal condition to support their learning and overall development.*

How Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month Got Started

Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month was initiated by Prevent Blindness, a leading volunteer eye health and safety organization in the U.S. Established in 1908, Prevent Blindness has long been a champion for eye health and safety.

The observance was strategically placed in August to align with the back-to-school season, ensuring that eye health becomes a priority as children prepare for the new academic year.

The campaign was launched to address the growing concerns around eye injuries and vision problems among children, aiming to educate parents, teachers, and children about the importance of maintaining healthy vision.

The Importance of Children’s Eye Health and Safety

The establishment of Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month was driven by several critical factors:

  • Prevalence of eye disorders. Many children suffer from undiagnosed vision problems, such as myopia, hyperopia, and amblyopia, which can significantly impact their learning and development. Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent long-term issues.
  • Eye injuries. Children are at a higher risk of eye injuries, especially during sports and recreational activities. Proper protective eyewear and safe practices can greatly reduce these risks.
  • Digital eye strain. With the increased use of digital devices, children are more susceptible to digital eye strain. Educating families about managing screen time and adopting ergonomic practices is essential for maintaining eye health.

Goals and Actions for Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month

The primary goals of Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month are to raise awareness about the importance of eye health and to encourage proactive measures to protect children’s vision. Key objectives include:

  • Early detection and treatment. Promoting regular eye exams to detect and treat vision problems early, ensuring children have the best chance of maintaining good vision throughout their lives.
  • Preventing eye injuries. Educating children on eye safety and providing them with appropriate protective eyewear to prevent injuries that could lead to permanent vision loss.
  • Encouraging awareness. Fostering a culture of proactive eye health management among families, schools, and communities, ensuring that children’s eye health is prioritized and addressed regularly.

By focusing on these goals, Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month aims to safeguard the vision of future generations, supporting their overall development and academic success.
