Fish oil is a dietary supplement rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are necessary for a variety of key bodily functions such as cell growth and muscle activity. Fish oil can have several other health benefits, including lowering triglycerides and high blood pressure which can harm your eyes. Based on these properties, some scientists theorize that fish oil may even be helpful if you have glaucoma. A recent paper published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research by Chinese nutritionists suggests that fish oil may serve as a helpful complement to traditional glaucoma treatments such as medicated eye drops, laser therapy, and surgery.*

Risk Factors for Developing and Worsening Glaucoma

Several factors increase the risk of developing glaucoma, and most of those factors also contribute to the progression of the disease toward vision loss and blindness. A few of these factors include:

  • Older age
  • A family history of glaucoma
  • Elevated IOP
  • African American heritage

Several recent studies have also suggested that people with glaucoma may have lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood. Authors of the most recent study suggest that taking omega-3 dietary supplements could help regulate fatty acid blood levels.

Omega-3s are classified as ‘essential’ because the human body cannot produce them independently; they must be obtained through diet or supplementation.

Incorporating Fish Oil into Your Diet

It’s not difficult to incorporate omega-3s into your diet, as they are naturally present in various foods such as:

  • Walnuts,
  • Flaxseeds,
  • Soy products, and
  • Fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines.

Some people find it challenging, however, to meet their daily intake requirements through diet alone. Fish oil supplements offer a convenient and concentrated source of omega-3s, making it easier to maintain optimal levels for eye health. If you’re considering taking fish oil or another omega-3 supplement, speak with your doctor to discuss the possible pros and cons.

It is crucial to consult a healthcare professional before beginning supplementation, as omega-3 fatty acids can interact with certain medications. The study authors encourage more rigorous research into the potential benefits of omega-3 supplementation for people living with glaucoma.
